While only a year or so of this administration, the dumpster has really started to burn. Let’s look at what Trump has already fed into the fire:
- Democracy – Trump has eliminated many of the built-in checks against Executive branch power, including the Inspectors General (20 have been fired). He is now trying to bring the independent Federal Reserve under his control so he can cut interest rates by >3%, a move that would result in tremendous inflation.
- Rule of Law – ICE has captured and deported people with no hearings or any due process. They’ve also tackled and handcuffed a US Senator for speaking up at a news conference.
- Public Funding – Cut $ billions in funding that Congress had already approved for science and medical research, education, public safety, veterans, the poor, disabled, etc
- Government Workers – Fired thousands of federal employees, gutting the effectiveness of agencies across the government (and then tried to rehire those most essential to those agencies)
- The Economy – Imposed ridiculous tariffs on the entire world, including our closest allies (like Canada and UK) and then stopped and restarted them almost at random. This has triggered price increases and worldwide economic upheaval.
- Universities and Law Firms – Threatened the largest universities and law firms with punitive action if they didn’t submit to administration’s orders – and pay $ millions in favors
- Thousands of Lives – Closed USAID, resulting in the deaths of one adult every 3 minutes and one infant every 31 minutes, according to Boston University
- Ukraine – Cut support for Ukrainians to fight off the Russian invasion – after promising to end the war on day 1
