Contact Legislators

This section provides information on current legislation and other activities before the US Congress and what you can do to support or oppose those measures. Some folks have asked “What good could my phone call (or email, etc) do to change anything?” Well, the answer is “plenty”.

Your legislators record every contact that’s made with their constituents, be it a phone call, an email, snail mail or personal visit to their offices (do this!). They use these contacts to extrapolate what their electorate is thinking about issues. Many people call every day – really. Frequency is another measure of how strong people feel about an issue.

5 Calls is an excellent resource for making calls to your congressional delegation. They can ID the specific pieces of legislation that are pending for your area and show you which rep or senator you should contact about it (and provide a link to their contact info). They also present a synopsis of each specific bill and even cook up a little phone script, if you need it. Pretty impressive – and makes the process much easier.

The “Take Action Now” link on the Indivisible website also provides updated listings of legislation with concise explanations and the suggested action you can take. Finally, the Congress.gov directory will provide your congressional representatives and Senators by entering your address. This directory has listings of current legislative activities and other info as well.

In addition to the US Congress, there are legislative issues in front of state and local governments that also need your input. Some of these are state-level legislation started as a response to actions (like executive orders) taken by the Trump administration. For information on current legislation and issues being considered in the State General Assembly, as well as your local city and county governments, see your local political party’s website.

The next step is to find out where events are happening in your area and make a plan to Show Up for our cause!
