Trump’s new law isn’t just ugly, it’s a Monster that’s coming after all Americans, but particularly those Americans receiving Medicaid and SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).
This Monster devours these benefits in order to finance tax cuts skewed dramatically towards the wealthiest Americans (see table below). It also adds over $3 Trillion to the national debt, creating long-term financial problems for the country and higher costs for American citizens.
- Almost $1 Trillion would be cut from the social safety net including: $698B from Medicaid, $267B from SNAP (CBO, 5/20/25)
- An estimated 15 million Americans, and probably far more, would lose health insurance due to cuts in Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act (CBO, 6/27/25). Rural and poorer folks would be hurt the worst, including the closing of an estimated 1 in 5 rural hospitals due to the loss of revenue from the large percentage of Medicaid patients they have. Nursing homes would face similar financial difficulties.
- SNAP benefits would be cut by $267B (30%) and work requirements for public benefits (Medicaid and SNAP) would be imposed amounting to 80 hrs/month. This new requirement was instated even though work requirements like this were recently tried by Arkansas and Georgia with negative results (according to KFF).
- Enrollees would have their eligibility reviewed twice per year, instead of once a year. This would create a huge backlog of casework, a particularly bad problem for government agencies that have had steep staff cuts already, not to mention the pain for people on Medicaid. The result of work requirements is expected to reduce SNAP participation by 3.2M people (CBO 5/22/25)
- $3.3 Trillion added to the national debt (NYT 6/30/25). This means the cost of borrowing, to pay back old debt and refinance new debt, would go up. This would further increase the overall deficit each year, as we finance that cumulative debt. The increased cost of borrowing by the government would most likely increase consumer borrowing (ie: mortgages, car loans, etc)
